What Is Dielectric Grease and What Is It Used For?

There are many common types of grease out there, however, one that may be unfamiliar to a lot of people is dielectric grease.

It is sometimes referred to as tune-up grease and is a silicone-based grease that repels moisture and protects electrical components against corrosion. It is also used to keep dirt, water, and other elements out of electrical connections.

It is most commonly used on automobiles but has a wide range of uses from traffic lights to marine applications.

What is dielectric grease made of?

Like many greases, dielectric grease is made of multiple components. Dielectric grease is made up of a silicone base and a thickener. It can take on difference appearances, however, CRC Dielectric Grease Select-A-Bead is an opaque white gel.

What make dielectric grease different from other greases?

Whilst there are many multi-purpose greases on the market, dielectric grease is specifically formulated to protect and insulate electric systems. It has many practical uses including automotive tune ups, home electrical work, and recreational vehicle wiring.

Because dielectric grease does not dissolve in most liquids, it’s also extremely good for marine and outdoor applications. It can be used to lubricate the rubber parts of electrical connectors, spark plug wires or to protect electrical connections on your boat or recreational vehicle.

When to use dielectric grease

As we have already touched upon, dielectric grease has a wide range of applications and acts as a lubricant, a sealant, an insulator, and a protectant. Here are some of the most common uses:

  • Battery terminals
  • Spark plug boots
  • Bulb sockets
  • Trailer connectors
  • General electrical connections
    General plastic or rubber lubrication

How to use dielectric grease

Dielectric grease can be applied to the metal parts of virtually any electrical connection that will be exposed to the elements to serve as a sealant that protects the connection from contamination and corrosion.

Application should be done very carefully, as the grease will cut off the flow of electricity through the connection if some of it is left between the mating surfaces. If you are unsure about how to use dielectric grease, consider talking to your local expert, whether it’s for your car or boat.

CRC Dielectric Grease Select-A-Bead

CRC Dielectric Grease Select-A-Bead is a pressurised, non-curing silicone compound used for electrical sealing, lubricating, protecting, and insulating.

CRC Dielectric Grease Select-A-Bead seals connectors exposed to the elements and maintains electrical performance during rain, fog, and salt spray.

It is temperature resistant and will not harden, freeze, dry or melt due to temperature fluctuations.

Silicone based, CRC Dielectric Grease Select-A-Bead lubricates without bulk, keeping contacts clean, reducing wear and helping them slide. It prevents dirt, moisture, rust, and oil from penetrating.

CRC Dielectric Grease Select-A-Bead is particularly useful for boaties who can apply it to battery terminals, spark plugs, electrical contacts, shore power inlets and boat electronics connectors.

It is also great for trailer plugs, light bulbs, makes connecting and disconnecting fish finders a breeze, light sockets, and anything else electrical that is exposed to the elements.

The CRC Select-a-Bead™ nozzle allows for easy control of silicone bead width, with a unique double piston pressurised system allowing for smooth, uniform dispensing from start to finish.
