The Season Keeps Getting Better
The pace hasn’t slowed down for our racing season on or off the track, as Michael picked up a 3rd in the NZ Sprint Car Champs in Cromwell, a 2nd in the sprint car Barry Butterworth event, and a win in the midget Barry Butterworth event!
The NZ Sprint Car title attracted a field of over 40 cars and a crowd to match over the two nights of action at Cromwell in the South Island. Michael remained consistent throughout his 5 heat races, staying near the top of the points table throughout and eventually qualifying 4th in the A-Main. We struggled a little in the A-Main and came home 3rd; the team were still proud to have another podium finish. The team then backed this up last weekend at Western Springs for the Barry Butterworth race, where Michael the defending champion started off the back of the field and came through to 2nd, with Jamie McDonald taking the win.
We had another stellar run in the #1NZ midget for the Barry Butterworth memorial at Western Springs, with Michael being the defending champion in the midget also and starting from the back of the field, in grid 20. In his usual fashion, Michael sliced and diced his way through the field, putting on a show for the crowd, taking the lead on lap 19 of the 40 lap race. Michael then went on to take the win comfortably, complete with doughnuts to write home about at the end of it all.
The team now travel to Palmerston North this weekend for round 1 of the 3 round Rolling Thunder series, in both the midget and sprint car. We will also run the Sprint Car at Harrisville on Sunday for Winged Thunder.
The season is not quite over yet but when we look back at our results so far, we haven’t ever been off the podium in the midgets, and only once left the podium in the sprint cars after suffering a cut tyre while leading – a true testament to both our crew for the reliable fast cars and the sponsors and supporters who allow us to run at a competitive standard. We truly appreciate your support!
Michael Pickens Back On Top!
The team have had an absolute blast coming out on top for both the NZ Midget Title at Stratford and the Heritage Shield at Western Springs!
There was a lot of anticipation and nerves surrounding the NZ Midget Title, as it meant not only having the #1NZ on the car for a whole year, but the chance for Michael to create history by breaking the record for the most NZ Midget Title wins ever. The race also clashed with the Chili Bowl in USA, which meant a very tough decision by Michael to choose to run the NZ Title (this turned out to be the right call, as the motor of the #39 Swindell car Michael was planning to drive unfortunately ended up expiring during the race).
Michael took a cautious approach throughout the heat races, careful to avoid getting caught in any carnage, resulting in him starting on the 2nd row for the 25 lap A-Main. Michael settled into 3rd place in the A-Main, then after a caution made a pass for 2nd place. By that stage leader Mosen had a generous lead on Michael, however Justin had once again set the car up perfectly, allowing Michael to reel Mosen in and made the pass for the lead around the outside in lap traffic, the crowd erupting as he did so. Michael went on to take his record breaking 8th NZ Midget Title win! This was then backed up with yet another A-Main win at the Springs this past Saturday night for the Heritage Shield – an awesome effort by the team!
2019 Off To A Great Start!
Michael Pickens had an absolute stellar international series in the GVI/CRC midget! The midget and sprint car crew were absolutely awesome, working hard over the whole series to get both cars turned around between the meetings, and it certainly showed in our results!
• Were on the podium every single night of the series with two wins, a second and three 3rds
• Were the only Kiwi to make the podium in the whole series
• Won the Herman Tros shield and overall International Series for being the highest points scorer
This was arguably the toughest international line up ever seen in NZ, and we are super proud of our team for these results.
CRC are proud to announce their partnership with Michael Pickens!
Pickens is a world renowned open wheel driver, with feature wins in the USA, Australia and New Zealand. CRC has partnered up with Pickens to sponsor his Midget car, from which he has had great success both in the past and this season. With 3 wins and 3 top 3 finishes so far Pickens was able to grab 2nd Place overall in the Rolling Thunder series, which concludes the New Zealand’s domestic season. Pickens now heads off shore, with the international portion of his season kicking off in Australia in mid-March.
Keep an eye out for regular updates on Pickens season.
